Orem, UT

Orem was incorporated fairly recently in comparison to its neighbors, in 1919, although there were settlers there as early as the 1850s or 60s. Orem’s population is a little over 90,000 as of 2015, and was ranked very highly as a place to raise a family by Forbes.

This great city has a large university in the area, Utah Valley University (UVU), with even more students than BYU in Provo, just to the south. UVU is the fastest growing university in Utah. UVU’s campus is interesting in that almost all of the buildings are connected via hallways, and students can traverse almost the entire campus without going outside. UVU’s aviation program is located at a satellite campus at the Provo Municipal airport. UVU is also the original home to the Woodbury Art Museum, although its primary location is now on the second floor of the University Mall.

Orem also is home to Stevens-Henager college, and the trade school, Mountainland Applied Technology Center (MATC). Orem was the original home to some notable businesses, including Novell, Wordperfect (now owned by Corel), and Omniture (now part of Adobe, up in American Fork), and Zuka Juice, which was acquired by Jamba Juice. Mity-Lite, Bluehost, and Blendtec are still located in Orem.

In addition, the Summerfest is held here every year in early June— most attractions are at the City Center Park, east of city hall. This fun city is also well known for it’s Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, which occurs every year at the end of the summer, usually at the end of August, at a park up the canyon.

Orem gets less precipitation than nearby Provo, and quite a bit less in the way of snow (close to half). Nevertheless, the winters are still cold, and there’s plenty of snow to go around. With beautiful spring weather, dry, intense summers, and cold winters, Orem is a place where your outdoor spaces are worth some investment.
