In 2014, it had an estimated population of 84,300, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. Much of its history revolves around the railway system. To this day, the city still operates at greater rail traffic, making it a major railway hub. Historically, the transcontinental railroad was completed in Promontory, UT (in 1869); Promontory is about an hour by car to the northwest of Ogden.

As a principal city within the Ogden-Clearfield area, Ogden provides a strategically convenient location for commercial and manufacturing activities. According to Forbes in 2010, the area is among the top 10 places to raise a family.

Forbes also ranked Ogden, in 2013, as the 16th best place for business and careers. The city is headquarters to major corporations like Bank of Utah, America First Credit Union, Autoliv North America, and FJ Management Inc., formerly known as Flying J.

The city has access to the Wasatch Range foothills, which are perfect for trail running, hiking, mountain biking, and skiing. For rock climbing enthusiasts, the quartzite cliffs along the Ogden foothills are among the favorite sites.

The major higher education institution is Weber State University, with an undergrad population of about 25,000. Ogden Applied Technology College (OATC) is located on the north end of town, and less than an hour away to the north is the University of Utah in Logan.

The north half of the Front Runner line with UTA ends just north of Ogden, in Pleasant View, near the Weber County Fairgrounds.

Other places of interest in Ogden include DaVinci Academy of Science and the Arts, Ott Planetarium, Peery’s Egyptian Theatre, and Treehouse Children’s Museum.
