Layton, Utah

Layton is a city in the United States located in Davis County, Utah.  It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. During the 2010 census, the city had a population of 67,311, and it was estimated to rise to 72,231 by 2014.

Layton was settled in the 1850s as an overflow from Kaysville. The town of Layton is named after Christopher Layton, who was a Mormon leader. The area of Layton was included in the boundaries when Kaysville was incorporated as a city in 1868, but by the 1880s many Layton residents wanted to be separate from Kaysville. The people from the Layton challenged Kaysville’s leaders to tax their properties and claimed they received no municipal help. The movement to be separate from Kaysville finally succeeded in 1902, and Layton was then an independent unincorporated area. After some more growth, it became an incorporated town in 1920.

The town’s population increased slowly and by 1940 it had reached about 600. When Hill Air Force Base was put in just north of the area in 1940 the population increased dramatically. War workers swarmed to the area and in 1950 the census counted 3,456 people. In that year, Layton became a city and then transformed into a residential community and was no longer just a farm town. The growth of the town slowed after the war, but Layton continued to grow as a suburban bedroom community of Salt Lake City.  Those not employed at the Air Force base began commuting to the Ogden area and Salt Lake City. The city continued to expand and in 1985, Layton surpassed Bountiful as the most populous city in Davis County.

Layton is conveniently located near Salt Lake City, Ogden, Salt Lake City International Airport, Antelope Island, and the FrontRunner commuter rail. Layton is also a city leader in economic development for the area including Hill Air Force Base, being a large hospitality district (1,000+ hotel beds), multiple national retail and food chains, the Layton Hills Mall, East Gate Business Park, and Weber State University.
