Establishment of Magna

Settlement in the area began when the Mormon pioneers arrived in Salt Lake Valley. By 1868, farmers who settled at the base of the Oquirrh Mountains established the community known as Pleasant Green. Because the name was so similar to Pleasant Grove, just a few miles to the southeast, the name was changed from Pleasant Green to Magna in 1906, mostly at the urging of postal officials.

For many years, Magna remained unincorporated, but in recent years it has become a township in its own right. Copper mining was a popular activity in the township during the early 1900s. It transformed the agricultural area into an industrial community.

One of the prominent industries that thrived during this period was Utah Copper Company, which was founded by D.C. Jackling; it later changed its name to Kennecott Copper Corp.

As of 2010, it has a population of about 26,000, an increase from 2000’s figure of around 22,000. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 7.4 square miles. It shares its borders with the Oquirrh Mountains and the Great Salt Lake. Magna’s website tells a bit about some local landmarks: “The Empress Theatre opened in 1916 originally as a Burlesque show for the local miners at Kennecott. In 1917 it began showing silent movies. The theater remained open as a movie theater through at least 1930.” The Empress Theater reopened recently and holds live theater events.

More well-known is the Great Saltair, which now regularly hosts music shows, from notable bands. Collective Soul, Evanescence, the Deftones, and other popular artists have performed there, but the structure is over a century old, having opened in 1893. It has survived 3 fires and has been called the “Coney Island of the West.”

The Magna Ethnic and Mining museum has ongoing projects in identifying ethnic trends in Utah’s early settlers, and is located on Main Street, only a couple of blocks from the Empress Theater.

Magna’s no longer very far from other areas, given the growth of so much of Salt Lake valley in population.
